My name is not \u201cThose People.\u201d
\nI am a loving woman, a mother in pain,
\ngiving birth to the future, where my babies
\nhave the same chance to thrive as anyone.<\/p>\n

My name is not \u201cInadequate.\u201d
\nI did not make my husband leave \u2013
\nhe chose to, and chooses not to pay child support.
\nTruth is though, there isn\u2019t a job base
\nfor all fathers to support their families.
\nWhile society turns its head, my children pay the price.<\/p>\n

My name is not \u201cProblem and Case to Be Managed.\u201d
\nI am a capable human being and citizen, not a client.
\nThe social service system can never replace the
\ncompassion and concern of loving grandparents,
\naunts, uncles, fathers, cousins, community \u2013
\nall the bonded people who need to be
\nbut are not present to bring children forward to their potential.<\/p>\n

My name is not \u201cLazy, Dependent Welfare Mother.\u201d
\nIf the unwaged work of parenting,
\nhomemaking and community building were factored
\ninto the Gross National Product,
\nMy work would have untold value. And why is it that mothers whose
\nHusbands support them to stay home and raise children
\nAre glorified \u2013 and why don\u2019t they get called lazy and dependent?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This is a beginning of a poem by Julia K. Dinsmore. Her book took me back to my short experience in Detroit. The injustice, the lie called the American Dream, the difference between neighborhoods, the blatant racism, the systematic violence, the corrupt system, and the working poor stuck in a cycle of poverty, all is there in Mrs Dinsmore’s poetic memoirs or at least I sense it there. <\/p>\n
